They say that after getting a king size bed, one of the best ways to ensure cohabitation happiness amongst couples is having a his and her master bathroom. The idea here is to create a functional dully-occupied space that’s used several times a day. Follow these tips for the ideal master bath!

DO Compromise – Since this is a space you and your partner will be sharing, be sure to discuss the must-haves that each of you have on your list. You may agree that radiant heating is important for both of you, but only one of you cares about a heated towel rack. Another thing to consider is storage. If he’s a neat freak and she likes to keep her makeup out on the counter, perhaps she’ll require more cabinetry to keep you both happy. Make these distinctions as early as possible to that a design plan can be clearly laid out.

DO Choose a Design Together – There are so many options out there for decorating your bathroom that you are sure to find materials that work for both of you. Tile flooring is especially versatile design-wise and fits any budget. Mosaics are a good way to mix your tastes together in a harmonious way.

DO Have a Seat – One of the biggest afterthoughts of designing a master bath is the seating area. Be sure to at least have a bench somewhere, if not a love seat (you never know when an extended conversation can happen). Remember, you’re creating a sanctuary that you and your partner will share…it should a great place to lay back.

DON’T Share – Caring isn’t always sharing. Aside from perhaps a bath tub, ideally, occupants of a master bath should aim to keep as many things separate as possible…even the toilet when feasible. Dual sinks are a must, as well as dual mirrors (if not a single, expansive one). Pro tip: when designing the sinks, be sure to give each person plenty of surface space. Also, be sure to equip the shower with dual heads so you’ll always have the option of showering solo or as a team.

DON’T Forget About Bath Time – We wouldn’t be unreasonable and tell you to get two separate bathtubs, but if a separate soaking tub is on your wishlist, be sure to get one that fits you and your partner comfortably. You’d be surprised how many couples forget to actually sit in the tub before they buy it, only to be disappointed in the size/fit once it is installed.
